What does the emerging academic research suggest on using ChatGPT in the classroom?

Artificial intelligence is all around us, and in terms of understanding what it is and how it can be used in the classroom, it's still relatively early day days for teachers.

When I last wrote about ChatGPT in April 2023, at the time of writing, there were approximately 8,000 academic references on Google Scholar. (Updated Nov 2023: There are now almost 86,000!)

Searching across the field of education, there were ~3,400 articles on “ChatGPT in education” and 503 references to its
