How does technology influence teaching and learning?

From a fresh-faced school leader in 2005 to an influential voice in 2024, Bett reflects how technology has shaped my teaching through the power of the tech community in education.

1, Technology can transform teaching

My first Bett in 2005 marked the beginning of my journey in school leadership, focused on teaching, learning, and IT. This exploratory visit opened my eyes to the potential of educational technology.

As a secondary design and technology teacher in London around 2000, Bett was a guiding light, showcasing how technology could transform teaching. It provided not just tools, but also a vision for dynamic, engaging learning.

Returning in 2024, my perspective had evolved alongside my career. Bett, known for its strong community, offered more than just technology; it was a hub of innovative ideas and collaboration, far surpassing typical events.

2. Community is powerful

Attending Bett inspired me to build my community through @TeacherToolkit, sharing educational ideas, fuelled by the conviction that technology can transform education. The event showcases how small steps with tech can substantially impact the classroom.

My journey began with small steps with tech, such as simple technologies like flatbed scanners, evolving into visualisers and more advanced tools such as networks, servers and management platforms. As I progressed to senior leadership, these innovations became integral across our classrooms.

Over time, my Bett experiences shifted from discovering what’s available to selecting impactful technologies. This evolution from social media tools and my blog, which has now surpassed 19 million readers, highlights how the community is so powerful in embracing and developing educational technology.

3. Building confidence

As my online presence expanded, I began actively participating in the educational technology sphere, offering insights and shaping trends. Bett has been instrumental in building confidence among teachers in utilising technology. This event fosters an environment where technology enhances learning and strengthens teacher-student relationships, moving focus away from administrative tasks.

I don’t view Bett as an event.

Meet Bethan …

Bethan, a key stage 2 leader and year three teacher at Pontyclun Primary School, South Wales, illustrates how Bett unites and inspires educators.

For me, attending Bett can ignite a passion for integrating simple yet effective tech tools into your teaching. I always cherish the Friday-night TeachMeet sessions at Bett, where teachers collaborate and discuss pedagogy.
