During a very stressful time of year, I offer this light-hearted post on teacher stereotypes for teachers who read my blog.

Here I offer several analogies of the types of teachers found in every school and the attire they adorn. This is just a snapshot and is not comprehensive of all that exists. The blogpost is also designed in jest … Share it.

Teachers allow themselves to be consumed by their role and environment. We often see ourselves in a role, either with a certain demeanour to portray, or with a certain professional stance to take or adhere to. However, even though having a high standard of professional conduct is entirely acceptable and desirable, there are occasions when we can allow our position – or our attire – to go to our heads.

The Teacher Swagger (or a teacher with swag) is found on the corridors and playgrounds of every school. There are many give-aways, but I’d like to suggest there are certain stereotypes that we will all be very familiar with. The Teacher Swagger is the attire adorned by teachers, including the assets certain personalities and job-types hold on their possession.

Swagger is revealed by the nature of teachers and their jobs, as well as the use of technology or fashion-savvy teachers dressed to impress. Items such as digital devices, ID cards, gizmos and fancy gadgets are also a give-away!

The Swagger:

Here are a few stereotypes of teachers with swagger, working in a school near you. Can you spot yourself?

  • This type of teacher loves … the smallest ounce of power.
  • This type of teacher can be observed by … the way the walk around school; the type that swings their keys around in a large circular-motion as they walked down the corridor or across the playground.
  • This teacher will most likely dress … to impress, or not give a sh*t. They are happy that they have the one key/door-access power that overrides all and any other authority. They get their ego from the fact that everyone else is asking them for this key.

  1. You forgot me – Mrs Stationery fiend. I love the stuff and outdo any student – even year 7s with their new pencil cases stuffed with goodies. My desk is a joy to behold!

  2. That’s too funny! Quite accurate, as well. I did think the photo of New Staff would also fit Substitute Teachers. That terrified and frazzled expression!

  3. The Silent Rebel
This type of teacher loves … their own space, their own rules, their own classroom, anonymous feedback opportunities.
This type of teacher can be observed by … the following of students they accumulate in their teaching space at lunchtimes, their disregard for political correctness.
This teacher will most likely dress … anything that contrasts, bow tie, slogan t shirt ‘unhidden’ beneath benign jacket, rebellious ‘ just try me’ hair, flip flops summer and winter.

  4. Mrs Conscientious … Mrs Short sighted …cant see the misbehavin’ …. Mr H.A.P.P.Y already retired but they called me back …. so I don’t give a s_ _ _ for rules and have fun saying what I like – much to the amusement of the kids ! Mr Bore … I dont care how boring I am …. Mrs P.C. Liberal-left – believes all the “right” things !!
(Just some of those I have met and may even be !!)

  5. Mr or Mrs My way or no way! Refuses to be flexible or open to new ideas because they KNOW what’s best, even though all the research says maybe not….always like to just ‘catch you for a moment’ ‘ I won’t disturb you’ and then proceed for a very long time telling you what and how they have been having tremendous success doing it their way, even though they can see you are trying to work!

  6. Mr. Skuttlebutt. Mr. Skuttlebutt knows all the hot gossip both old and new. He has no problem sharing what he know, what the thinks he knows, and what he has heard. Mr. Skuttlebutt knows all his colleagues’/students’/parents’/leaders’ personal and professional business.
