The research is clear on working memory. To learn, you must be attentive in the moment. This is our conscious, explicit memory at work.
Great teaching requires teachers to command class attention before delivering meaningful instructions or information. If students are having low-level conversations whilst the teacher is talking, they are not conscious in that moment. Put simply, if they are not listening, they are not learning.
