Awra Amba is a small village in Northern Ethiopia, founded in the early 1970s by a group of idealistic farmers. Take your class to a unique gender-equal democracy and successful social enterprise in Ethiopia, with a free trial of this outstanding resource.

Awra Amba –  A thriving gender equal democracy

The farmers, all illiterate at the time, set out to co-create a new society from scratch; where women and men would be treated as equals, and where everyone would have access to education and healthcare. Since then, Awra Amba has transformed itself into a thriving community of around 500 people, with over 80 university graduates who were born and raised there. The village, which is run by 13 democratically elected committees, helps thousands of people in the region and receives visitors from all over the world.

The Awra Amba educational resource:

The Awra Amba Experience is a beautiful and immersive interactive learning environment, where pupils can explore the village and draw inspiration from their remarkable stories. The experience delves into themes such as equality, democracy, human rights, sustainability and entrepreneurship; and promotes values such as tolerance, empathy and generosity.

Here at Teacher Toolkit we think Awra Amba is a fantastically inspiring village that every child should be introduced to. A village functioning with total gender equality, where everyone has access to healthcare and education? We thought it was fictional! All teachers should be encouraging children to explore such a place.
