Ross works with pupils, teachers and school leaders across the world, supporting teaching and learning, workload and mental health. Ross is a qualified teacher who, across three decades, has worked in some of the most challenging secondary schools in London as a design technology teacher and as a deputy headteacher. Throughout his school leadership, he has been responsible for improving quality of teaching and learning and has an international profile as a leading contributor and organiser of professional development, research, and teacher wellbeing within a growing community of education professionals. As the most followed educator on social media in the U.K., he offers unique social media insights and support for schools and organisations. He is frequently asked to speak at national conferences and has worked with teachers all over the U.K. and in many parts of the world. He is regularly asked to reflect on educational developments in multiple publications about education policy and through his website, advocates teaching and supports thousands worldwide. He is a PGCE tutor and visiting tutor at the University of Buckingham and when not completing action doctoral research on and offline, he is either teaching teachers, reading, writing or tweeting!
Ross qualified as a teacher with a BAEd in Design Technology with Secondary Education (QTS) from Goldsmiths College, University of Arts London (93-97). He gained a masters degree in Design Studies from Central St. Martins College, University of Arts London (2006). He is a former SSAT Design Technology Lead Practitioner and was recognised by The Teaching Awards in 2004. He supports the charity work of Survivors UK; Education Support UK; Bliss Charity and Tommy’s Baby.
Ross has sold over 60,000 books worldwide. As a result of writing content on this blog, Bloomsbury Publishing asked McGill to write his first book, 100 Ideas – Outstanding Lessons in 2013, which has now sold over 24,000 copies and reached the top-30 of all books listed on Amazon, 3 months after publication. He wrote the book in three months! His second book, Teacher Toolkit: helping you survive your first five years (September 2015) is very popular with new teachers and his third, Mark Plan Teach, published in September 2017 has reached international success and has sold over 25,000 copies. This makes Ross Bloomsbury’s most successful education author, ever. His fourth book, Just Great Teaching offers insights from schools across the UK and is gradually reaching (British) school leaders around the world.
Ross has already started plans on his fifth book with some of his bloggers on this site, also with their own book deals. He has written for Schools Week newspaper and for the Guardian Education; preview all his citation and publications in the press.
Ross McGill was recognised by Debrett’s in 2015 and features in People of Today, which recognises over 20,000 individuals who are positively influencing Britain and inspiring others through their achievements and leadership. McGill received a Teaching Award and was nominated for ‘Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School in London, 2004’. In 2014 to 2019, Vuelio has awarded McGill with the ‘Best UK Education Blog‘ (20013-2019) and in March 2016, DRUM shortlisted Teacher Toolkit for ‘Best Use of Social Media‘ by alongside BBC, ITV, Vogue Magazine and The Mirror.
