How can you plan effective CPD on SEND?
Key to planning effective professional development is knowing what your staff know and don’t know and understanding their level of confidence with it.
This resource is a clear and simple self-auditing tool which allows Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCos) and other senior leaders to identify staff’s confidence with and understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), so they can plan Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to meet their staff’s needs.
Why is it useful?
The survey is very quick and easy to use. It enables the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to identify patterns across a department or the school. By asking for evidence and comments you are able to consider levels of confidence and knowledge. The two do not always go hand in hand.
This can be used to group staff according knowledge and confidence to focus CPD or develop triads or study groups to share good practice across the school.
Who is it for?
This is for use by the SENCo and other senior leaders to use with teaching staff and/ or teaching assistants and other support staff.
How do I use it?
- Share the survey with staff or groups of staff either within a meeting or through the staff information sharing system.
- Set a deadline for completion.
- The responses quickly show patterns and are easy to analyse.
- This can then be used to plan CPD.
- The audit can also be used as a ‘before and after’ to evaluate the impact of training and other CPD.
