Description

This month’s membership resource helps teachers and school leaders spot—and stop—teaching myths that waste time, drain workload, and give the illusion of impact.

In this resource, the focus is on neuromyths, “instructional illusions,” and critical thinking: why certain ideas spread so quickly in schools, why they feel convincing, and how to check the evidence before they become embedded in policy, CPD, or classroom routines. Rather than “debunking” for the sake of it, you’ll use simple evidence checks to improve decision-making: What’s the claim? What’s the mechanism? What would we expect to see in pupil learning? What would count as good evidence?

The pack is designed to strengthen research confidence and literacy across a school. It supports staff in moving from busy ≠ learning to practices that are measurable, sustainable, and aligned with what we know about cognition, memory, and classroom instruction.

What’s inside?

  • A clear explanation of what neuromyths are (and why they persist in CPD)
  • A practical Neuromyth Audit template to review current strategies and initiatives
  • An Evidence Check Scorecard to judge source quality, context-fit, mechanisms, outcomes, and limitations
  • A whole-school CPD implementation plan to build research literacy month-by-month
  • Reflection questions to support staff discussion and shared language.

Developed by Ross Morrison McGill (@TeacherToolkit), this resource helps schools protect time for high-impact practice, reduce fads, and build a more evidence-informed culture.
