Description

This classroom-ready resource gives pupils structured language to move beyond surface-level answers and into deeper thinking. The sentence stems guide children to explain, justify, compare, evaluate and challenge ideas in talk and writing, rather than stopping at the first thought. Designed for Year 1 through to Year 6, the stems work across every subject. The skills are consistent, but the sophistication grows with practice, helping pupils build confidence in articulating complex ideas. Teachers can model the stems, plan them into purposeful questioning, or prompt pupils to choose their own language during independent work and discussion. Over time, pupils begin to internalise these sentence structures so higher-order thinking becomes more automatic.
