Description

This resource contains three tiers of higher-order thinking sentence stems to support secondary pupils in moving from short answers to disciplined, academic reasoning. It is designed for Year 7 through to Year 13, across all subjects, with increasing sophistication over time.  This resource considers how structured language helps pupils explain, justify, compare, evaluate and challenge ideas with greater clarity and confidence. The stems can be used in writing or discussion, modelled by teachers, embedded into questioning, or offered as prompts for pupils to choose independently.

What’s inside:

  • How to use this resource guidance for teachers.
  • It is framed as a scaffold, not a script, strengthening oracy and extended writing.
  • Four graduated sets of sentence stems labelled Higher Order Thinking 1–4.
  • These appear to increase in sophistication, moving from accessible prompts to more formal academic phrasing.
