In some schools there may be a desire to evaluate anything and everything; a calendar of evaluation activities that see tasks, resources and staffing thinly stretched with monitoring activities leading to little or no actual school improvement. In this resource, I present 8 sources for evaluation, with a range of established and alternative processes to help individuals, departments and schools improve self-evaluation.
This download includes a walk-through video, editable slides and an optional professional development webinar and CPD certificate.
We know school evaluation has its place, but so does intelligent accountability. For teachers and schools to operate robust, fulfilling and evidence-based self-evaluation, clear policies, procedures and resources need to underpin the process. This also includes adequate time set aside for everyone to be engaged in the process.
Secondly, the evidence base needs to be defined if self-evaluation is to be used for professional development by the individual, or for performance evaluation by the organisation. Where self-reflection and critical evaluation is used to support the individual, it can encourage appreciation and open discussions for improvement.
Finally, the information you gather should evaluate what you don’t yet know and signpost what to do next!
If done well, self-evaluation contributes to teacher development, if done badly, it’s a reason why many teachers leave a school and for some, leave the profession.
