Description

When I conducted my Just Great Teaching research (2019), without question the section on pupil mental health was the toughest to complete. Throughout COVID, this challenge has been elevated for us all.

As educators, we play a key role in facilitating open dialogue around mental health, recognising the signs when a young person might be struggling and helping them to access the support they need.

In a climate where teachers are asked to do more during the working day, it’s important to take these issues back to basics. Have a face-to-face conversation.  Be attentive and listen to what the child is saying. Report all safeguarding concerns and signpost your students to support you or the school can offer.
