Supported by academic research (Woodley and McGill, 2018), I’ve created this resource to signpost the key hallmarks of a toxic school. This walkthrough storyboard will provide teachers with some reassurance as well as a set of tools they can use to help them leave or avoid a toxic culture.

Description

Toxic school culture. It’s a topic that needs discussion and cannot be swept under the carpet.

Whilst the marketisation of schools has increased accountability and competition, we’d be lying to ourselves if we ignored one avoidable influence – bullying in the workplace; even in our school classrooms, offices and corridors in and amongst our young people.

I’ve worked in a toxic school. I’ve witnessed bullying in Outstanding and Special Measures environments. Only 10 years ago, you would struggle to find any research on teacher wellbeing equating to school standards. Research on toxic school cultures, almost nothing.

A decade later, largely thanks to social media, teachers can share their stories and build their own safe network of support outside their workplace.

An interesting read. Very useful tips and ideas for reflection. Examples from teachers help to understand what things are like in other schools. Thank you!
