Description

In my role as a school leader, I was determined to learn how school policies lived out in practice and if school culture provided the conditions for all staff to thrive, and to complete their job to their best ability.

One of the most memorable exit interviews I ever conducted was with Eddie Addai, a fabulous maths teacher.

Having exit interviews as part of any organisation’s HR processes suggests your institution wants to be even better, rather than sweep any issues under the carpet. They can be a positive process, and school leaders must be prepared to be open and transparent and willing to hear difficult messages.

Any CPD and wellbeing programme should include exit interviews to gauge the opinions of staff who are departing. They are a unique chance to survey and analyse the opinions of departing employees; who generally are more forthcoming, constructive and objective than staff still in their jobs. Each exit interview is discussed at senior leadership and is a chance for all staff to give some constructive feedback; to leave on a positive note, with suggestions for improvement.
