How can we celebrate British Science Week?
Science fascinates children (and adults!). It helps us to develop a wider understanding of the world, pose questions and find solutions. Take part in this year’s British Science Week (9th – 18th March) by challenging your pupils to celebrate science in style!
Celebrating Science
- Ask pupils to consider the following questions in pairs or groups: What is science? How has science changed our world? Which famous scientist inspires you? What scientific question do we have? Why is science so important?
- Help pupils to research and explore top scientific enquiries that have improved our lives. Provide pupils with information about famous scientists too.
- Once pupils have gathered knowledge, explain that they will create their very own ‘celebration of science movie’. Be sure to check you have software to help with this (e.g. iMovie or check out these ideas at www.igamemom.com)
- Pupils can plan their movie, using the questions posed earlier as headings for each scene.
- Give pupils time to record and review their work.
- Completed videos can be uploaded onto the school website, shown in assembly or shared across year groups.
Why is it a good strategy?
Of course, during science week there should be rich and engaging science lessons (see here for some ideas) but finding time to celebrate science as a subject is a great way to raise its profile and get pupils buzzing about their science lessons.
Tip
Why not link this activity to literacy by creating a storyboard, script and even a movie review.
