Are you a teacher in need of support before you go back to school?

This is a short post for teachers heading back to school, particularly new teachers and those working in their 2nd – 5th years in the classroom. You can now purchase my latest book – 30% off with Bloomsbury Books before 11th September 2016 – packed full of all my advice for surviving and thriving in the classroom.

We live in a time, where teachers are bashed about from political whim, ideology, fad and Ofsted gimmick … but slowly the emphasis is changing from ivory towers to bloggers and tweeters. And this is why I am passionate about blogging and social media. We can control our own destiny. If we can organise ourselves, we can shape national policy. I am evidence of this. As a result of blogging and tweeting, I am seeing my literacy demons as a child vanish through the power of writing and reflecting my own ideas. To see these validated by 1000s of colleagues all over the UK and overseas is phenomenal. And I will say this again, if I can do it, then so can you. My time in teaching has not always been rosy, and I simply hope that this book is an expression of my experience and collection of strategies that I KNOW work in the classroom. On a personal level, I hope that this book contributes to the debate on education, as well as encourage many teachers to stay stuck in the profession and enjoy teaching (More here).

Below I have shared 3 reviews from Amazon.

Although billed as a book designed to help new teachers survive their first five years, this is a well-written and thoughtfully designed book which will serve both NQTs and more established colleagues as a reminder of why they joined the profession and what it takes to not merely survive, but to be effective.

Ross’s book is aimed at teachers starting out in our profession and gives advice and guidance on not just how to survive the first 5 years, but how to develop and flourish in to an effective teacher. I think any teacher would get use from this book, even if they have been in the classroom for a number of years. The book is split into five sections with each representing a “quality” that will be needed/developed during the year. This helps give the book a clear focus as it advances from surviving and developing resilience on to being innovative and aspirational. The book covers a huge amount both inside and outside the classroom. It covers topics as diverse as behaviour, staffroom politics, homework, observation, planning, marking, wellbeing, interviews, CPD, ICT and career progression (to name but a few). I have been a teacher for 16 years (and so am not the intended target audience) but I took an awful lot away. The section on preparing for parents’ evenings in particular was a real opener.

There are some books written by ‘experts’ who have taught for a couple of years and who were fast tracked into the media spotlight, there are books written by ‘researchers’ who tell people how to be successful teachers theoretically and then there is Ross, a teacher who has devoted twenty years to his students and to sharing his experiences to help other, passionate and committed professionals to be the best they can be. This is without a doubt the most authentic, practical and dynamic book I have ever read for teachers. Ross is an education hero because he gives and shares with such honesty and humility. This is about teachers, teaching and children learning; no other agenda… Brilliant, buy it, please!
